Seasonal Management

Good management practices are the key to your success as a beekeeper. Honey bee colonies should be opened, checked or manipulated one to four times each month from February through October. Timely management practices, applied when the colonies are opened, are the basis of productive beekeeping.

Colonies may be opened for checking on warm days during the winter months when the bees are flying freely. Avoid overexposure of the brood to cold winds during these inspections. Complete your work and close the hive as quickly as possible.
